2018 in Review!

2019 is in full swing but with 2018 just barely out of sight,  it seems like a good time to reflect back on the last twelve months and all of the moments that I had the opportunity to document. I was so energized and inspired by the many different types of connections and stories that I have been able to capture this year and it has only pushed me to want to challenge myself even more in 2019.  I’m hard at work planning away for this year’s sessions but in the meantime, here’s an image heavy post that gives just a taste of what the year looked like from behind my camera between January and December of 2018.  I can’t believe how quickly the year seemed to fly by and I hope to see lots of your families once again this year!

For the second year in a row, I offered Motherhood sessions in the winter and they were such a success that I ended up offering them on three different dates. These are truly some of my favorite kinds of sessions to shoot. They are raw and simple and right in line with the kind of deep connection that I want to document. I started offering them because I know just how many moms are aching for photos of themselves with their beloved babies. I wanted to strip away the beautiful outdoor background and all of the color and make these images purely about the love between a mother and her children. These are the kinds of images that I truly hope will stay within families for many, many years.

When the snow finally melted away, we were gifted with some of the loveliest spring color and light and it was so great to get back to places like the the Esplanade and the Arboretum for some classic spring sessions, complete with cherry blossoms and all of the other beautiful signs of nature coming to life once again.

Spring also meant the beginning of beach session season. I think my very favorite beach sessions are in the late summer and early fall (the light is stunning, sunsets are relatively early and it is usually warm) but when the weather cooperates, Spring beach sessions are a close runner up. The first few seen here are spring and early summer sessions and then the remainder of the sessions highlighted are late summer/early fall.

In late August, the sunflowers decided to make their annual appearance a couple of weeks earlier than anticipated so I almost didn’t get to see them at all because my schedule was nearly full when they reached peak bloom. I’m so glad that a couple of families were able to meet me on short notice for these sunflower sessions on a gorgeous summer night. Timing is everything with these beauties but boy are they worth the scheduling headaches!

Throughout the year, when I wasn’t shooting in gorgeous fields or on pristine beaches, I spent a lot of time at one of my favorite spots for city sessions, Fan Pier Park in the Seaport neighborhood. I love the views and there are SO many great spots to explore in a relatively small and totally walkable area. And at sunset, the light over the skyline is perfection!

This year, we had the rainiest fall we’ve had in years and every week, I was holding my breath watching the weather and trying to figure out how many sessions I might need to reschedule.  And as has been the case the in the last few years, foliage was late to the party again, barely bringing much color at all until nearly Halloween but then when it arrived, it ARRIVED and we had one of the most spectacularly beautiful Novembers that I can recall. 

When mid-November rolled around, I was lucky enough to get to work with a bunch of families for tree farm sessions up in Topfield and I will most definitely be doing these again. It was cold, it was windy and oh, was it ever worth it!

And when the foliage was gone and the tree farm sessions were over, there was still beautiful early winter light to play with and a even a dusting of snow on the ground for some of my last outdoor sessions of the year:

When I wasn’t outside at all of the beautiful spots that Massachusetts has to offer for photo sessions, I loved all of the cozy in home sessions.

All year long, there were babies…..soooo many beautiful babies. I photographed babies at home and at hospitals for Fresh 48 sessions and sometimes, we documented the pregnancy with maternity photos first.

Last but certainly not least, I had the privilege of documenting six weddings in 2018, each with its own unique twist. I loved working with all of my brides and grooms and had so much fun at each of their big days. While I only take on a small number of weddings each year, this last year only reinforced how much I really do love being able to capture the beginning of a new chapter between two people and all of the love in the room that they get to be surrounded by.  Really, that’s the running theme throughout all of the moments I get to photograph over the course of a year–love and connection and being present right here and now with the people who you treasure the most.
